At the WTA Istanbul 2021, Sorana Cirstea surprised the number one the seeding Elise Mertens in the final. The Romanian tennis player left the crumbs to her opponent in the first set, which she closed by losing only one game, in addition to serving.
In the second, the Belgian raised the level and snatched Cirstea's serve in the fourth game. The positive moment of Mertens ended on the most beautiful of her, when at 5-3 she lost her serve to zero. Cirstea then won the next two games and earned the chance to serve for the match; chance wasted bitterly.
In the tie-break, however, the Romanian managed the tension and definitively extinguished Mertens' hopes. After 13 years from her first title, Cirstea concluded her journey in Turkey with an important success. In the other WTA event in Stuttgart, Ashleigh Barty won the title against Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
