Elena Vesnina made her WTA debut at 2003 Moscow. She enjoyed great success in doubles with Makarova: together they won three Grand Slam doubles titles (2013 Roland Garros, 2014 US Open and 2017 Wimbledon) as well as the gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics and the 2016 WTA Finals title. In 2009, her first Top 30 season, she was runner-up twice in Auckland (l. to Dementieva in final) and New Haven (l. to Wozniacki in final). In 2013 Vesnina won her first two WTA titles in Hobart (d. Barthel in final) and Eastbourne (d. No.6 Li Na and Hampton in final). In 2015 the Russian finished outside the Top 100 in 10 years. In 2016 Vesnina made her maiden Grand Slam semifinal (l. eventual champion S.Williams). Ranked No.50 at the time, was the 19th unseeded player to advance to a Grand Slam SF since 2001 Wimbledon (first Grand Slam with 32 seeds). Aside from it, 2016 season highlight was reaching final at Charleston (l. Stephens in F). Vesnina posted as a consequence the first top 20 season, ranked No.16.

In 2017, the Sunshine Double swing saw her capture first WTA Premier Mandatory title at Indian Wells for biggest win of career (d. Kuznetsova in F). At 31, she was fourth‐oldest player to win the Indian Wells title. She completed the year making her second appearance at WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, having always fallen in round robin stage.
