
Marcelo Melo, born on September 23, 1983, is a Brazilian tennis player former number one in the ATP doubles ranking, a specialty of which he is one of the best interpreters. He got the best results with Lukasz Kubot and Ivan Dodig.
Doubles specialist, he reached the top position in November 2015. With his new partner Lukasz Kubot, after a long and hard-fought final, he won the Wimbledon Tournament in 2017, and the couple became number 1 at the end of the year. With the Pole he also reaches the final at the US Open. He plays with Kubot until the 2020 ATP Finals, stopping playing together due to tactics now too well known to their opponents, only to then return to pair up in 2021 in Dubai and from Roland Garros to the US Open. From autumn 2021 he resumes playing with Ivan Dodig.
He also achieved good results in mixed doubles, in 2007 together with Flavia Pennetta he reached the semifinals but were defeated 6-0, 4-6, 10-8 by Ekaterina Makarova and Jaroslav Levinský. In 2009, together with the American Vania King, he reached the final of the French Open, thus becoming the seventh Brazilian tennis player to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament. They win the first set but in the second they lose in the tie-break and in the third it ends 10 to 7.
