Gustavo Kuerten

Gustavo Kuerten is a former Brazilian tennis player, three times Roland Garros winner. He was also number 1 in the ATP men's tennis world rankings.

Kuerten was born in Florianópolis in southern Brazil. His family has German roots.

Guga's life was immediately marked by two family tragedies; the first concerns his younger brother Guilherme, who suffered from cerebral palsy and who, after a painful life, died on November 7, 2007. Gustavo was deeply affected by his brother's daily hardships, so much so that, every year of his career, he donated the prize money from a tournament won at the NGO, a Brazilian company that gave assistance to people with problems similar to those of his brother. Guga also gave every trophy he won to his younger brother as a souvenir.

The second tragedy involved his father, who was an amateur tennis player and tennis referee. In 1985, when Gustavo was only 8 years old, he died of a heart attack while he was refereeing a match between two juniors in Florianópolis.
