
Ilie Nastase was born in Bucharest in 1946, the son of a worker in the tennis club of the Romanian National Bank. He finally approaches tennis at the age of twelve after winning his first tournament in which he receives a new racket as a gift. In his career, from 1970 to 1985, he won 57 singles titles, 51 doubles, 2 Grand Slam trials, four editions of the Masters in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975 and two Italian Open.
He finished first in the ATP rankings in 1973 and was the first European tennis player to surpass the million dollar mark in winnings. He totaled $2,076,761 in prize money. He formed with compatriot Ion Țiriac one of the strongest doubles couples in the 70s worldwide. Also relevant are his performances as a double actor paired with Jimmy Connors. A lover of the good life, he didn't always manage to reconcile his private life with the discipline of an athlete.
At the end of his career he also devoted himself to politics managing to be elected to the Romanian parliament in 1995. He finally tried unsuccessfully to be elected mayor of the capital. In 1986 he published a crime novel, entitled Killer in the field (original title Tie-Break), set in the world of tennis. The novel was published in Italy in 1987 in the Giallo Mondadori series with the n. 2001.
