Anabel Medina Garrigues

Anabel Medina Garrigues was born in Valencia on July 31, 1982. In her career she won 11 WTA singles tournaments, almost all on red clay, reaching number 16 in the world in May 2009.

An excellent doubles player, she won a total of 24 WTA doubles titles, including two Grand Slam tournaments at the Roland Garros in 2008 and 2009. Also in 2008, she won the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics paired with compatriot Virginia Ruano Pascual, losing only in the final against the United States of the Williams sisters.

Her career begins in 1999. She wins some ITF tournaments until 2001, when she wins the Palermo tournament. With María José Martínez Sánchez as doubles partner, she manages to win 4 WTA titles. She continues by winning other ITF titles, until she reconfirms herself as the winner at the 2004 Palermo tournament by beating Flavia Pennetta 6-4 6-4 in the final.

2004 will also be a good year for doubles, in fact she and Arantxa Sánchez win the tournament in Palermo. In the following year she prevailed first in the Strasbourg tournament and then she reconfirmed herself as champion in Palermo, this time beating Klára Zakopalová. She won 2 WTA doubles titles, one with Dinara Safina and the other with the Italian Vinci.
