Anna Kurnikova was born in Moscow on June 7, 1981, but has US citizenship. She was the first of the great Russian tennis players, and she became famous thanks to the semifinal reached at the 1997 Wimbledon Championships at the age of 16.
Despite not having won any singles titles, in November 2000 she reached the 8th position of the WTA ranking. Instead, she was an excellent doubles player, winning 16 WTA titles including two Grand Slam tournaments (Australian Open 1999 and 2002) and two year-end Masters. she topped the doubles rankings in November 1999.
Due to her frequent injuries, she was forced to retire in 2003 at the age of 22.
She has also worked successfully as a model, starting photo shoots at 16 when she made her debut at the US Open. She was for a long time an icon of society and many of her approached tennis thanks to her skills.
Anna Kurnikova was named to People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in 1998, 2000, 2002, and 2003. In 2002 she topped the top spot in FHM magazine's 100 Most Sensual Women in the US and UK editions.
She is married to singer Enrique Iglesias.
