The Internazionali BNL d'Italia are the most important Italian tennis tournament for men and women. They are part of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 circuit and the WTA 1000 circuit.
They are held mainly in May of each year, on the Roman fields of the Foro Italico. Since 2011 they have been combined events, i.e. the men's and women's tournaments take place at the same time. For its first five editions the tournament had its headquarters at the Tennis Club Milano.
In 1935 the men's tournament was held in Rome, while the women's tournament remained in Milan. From the following year until 1949 the tournament was suspended. Subsequently it was always held at the Foro Italico with the exception of the 1961 edition, when it was moved to the Press Club of Turin for the centenary of the Unification of Italy.
It became a professional tournament from the 1969 edition. Since the 2002 edition, the official name of the tournament, for sponsorship reasons, is Internazionali BNL d'Italia. From 2016 to 2018 it was voted the best tournament in the Premier 5 category. The 2020 edition was initially canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but then postponed to September.
