The Maharashtra Open is India's premier tennis tournament since 1996. It is currently held in Pune. From 1996 for four editions, it was held in April, to then be moved to the first week of January from 2000. Following the change of sponsor due to the divestment from tobacco companies, the tournament was also TATA Open from 2002 to 2004 , and from the following year it is co-sponsored by the government of Tamil Nadu, a collaboration that will end in 2010.
The tournament was held in New Delhi in the inaugural edition, to then be moved to the Chennai headquarters from 1997 to 2017, while from 2018 is held in Pune.
Switzerland's Stan Wawrinka holds the singles record with 4 titles, while Indian Leander Paes holds the doubles record with 6 titles, 5 of which he won alongside compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi.
